A double blind study published in the December 2005 edition of the Annals Of Internal Medicine showed that 3 months of a specifically designed yoga practice gave significant relief to subjects suffering chronic back pain.   The condition for pain varies from curves in the spine and the muscles.

The conditions in your upper and lower back are connected. When one spinal curve increases the other will usually increase to compensate - worsening the condition of your back and your back pain. You can use yoga to restore some of the balance to your body. This will allow your back to loosen up and begin healing.

This 2 1/2 hour workshop on back care will take you through some basic yoga exercises that can help strengthen your spine, and how to compensate your postures so that you will not hurt yourself during your regular yoga practice.

Goddess Workshop
16 Nov 2008

This workshop was successfully organized at Cocoon Yoga studios on 16th November 2008. The participants had a wonderful time! Read their testimonials below...

"The Goddess Workshop I attended was an amazing and unexpected experience. Walking through the door, I was greeted with a delicious banana smoothie welcome drink and a fragrant string of jasmine buds tied around my ankle. The workshop began with soothing music, light stretching and energy-raising breathing techniques with names like 'Breath of Fire'. Fezia gave a wonderful talk which covered the 11 Moon Centres that all women have (as opposed to the one and only Moon Centre that men have!) and their effects on a woman's daily life. Workshop participants got in touch with the sacredness of their womanhood through such intuitive means as meditation, mantras, dance and even artwork. Soul searching is hard work, and after the class came to an end, all participants were treated to Fezia's amazing Yogi tea, eggplant pakoras, fruit and herb salad, as well as warm pita bread. I left the workshop with a soft pink rose, feeling relaxed and well-fed in both body and soul." - Aiza Rusli

"The Goddess Workshop started out relaxed and warm. Fezia lead us in this celebration of womanhood. In this short morning session, I felt deeper and more connected with myself. Listening to my heartbeat and body rhythms was something that I have not done for a long time. Getting in touch with and releasing the creative energies within you was rewarding. Fezia enlightened us that the complexity of women is due many chakras within us, and understanding these chakras and when they become dominant will be the key to understanding ourselves and our mood swings! After the morning stretches, poses and meditation, we were treated to a refreshing vegetarian lunch, washed down with some aromatic yogi tea. Eliza, another participant, kindly made beautiful Angel cards for all of us. It was indeed a morning well spent." - Janet Yap

"When I recently decided to attend the goddess workshop it was purely for fun. However the knowledge and experience I gained from it,I shall treasure all through my life. I have never attended any yoga or such workshops before. To my surprise it

was awe inspiring, and the manner in which you conducted and presented the workshop was very interesting, helpful and meaningful. Not to mention the great food too. The awareness created of the woman's 11 moon centers has made me see my true self. Words cannot describe the benefits I have gained. Thank you." - Susie Mahendran

“GODDESS WORKSHOP - A name that suggests much ambiguity to the mind of any random person, this workshop has much to offer to any woman intending to better herself to her surroundings as well as the relationships in her life. A workshop that brings instant awareness to the fragile existence of mutual understanding between man to woman and then woman to woman, this workshop has the potential of providing a powerful tool to the better management of human affairs in daily living. From playing the roles of mother to daughter, to playing the dynamic woman in a man's world, this workshop will provide insight to any woman who wants a life of peace and harmony. Meticulously delivered by Fezia Tyebally, with the nurturing hues of love and every thing Mother, this workshop will change the life of any woman wanting the best in life. From a personal perspective, I believe that this is one workshop that should be made available to families working together as a united race of men and women as well as to growing teenagers who find much difficulty in adjusting themselves in the procession of the modern world. A well-thought of workshop, this is a treasure that should be kept sacred in every parcel of a woman's existence.” - Sujata Nandy, Yoga Life Editor

Halloween Yoga Class and Party (for all ages)
31 Oct 2008

Last week, I went to a Halloween Yoga party held in Sri Hartamas, organised by Cocoon Yoga. This is the first time I am attending a Halloween party, and I feel so fortunate for the opportunity to be a part of this incredibly fun event. At the same time, I felt a bit like a newbie during the Halloween potluck yoga party. What do people do at a Halloween party?

Before the party, a few of us started preparing the colored balloons and the candle lights, and set up the table with food. We then went to the club house to have a quick bite before getting dressed in our Halloween costumes. (Actually, the food was prepared for the kids but we filled our hungry stomachs with the lovely snacks anyway!)

Once we were ready in our costumes, we went door to door, happily calling out “Trick or Treats! Trick or Treats!”. Most of the little children in colorful Halloween costumes asked only for Treats though, and I assume they had already made up their minds about what they really wanted.

Walking around with a group of ghosts, pirates, captains, bumblebees and other amusing characters made me feel quite marvellous yet somewhat silly, and very warm thanks to the double layer of clothing. The candy-seeking journey was simply crazy, and thoroughly enjoyable. We all had a good laugh when we were stopped by a horrible, blood-covered devil and promptly handed the little creature two handfuls of candy. Most people were giving away candies to avoid being frightened by the cheeky trick-or-treaters with a trick or two up their sleeves.

After the long walk, we sat down for the potluck party. What amazing food! I ate till I could not eat anymore, and wished that I had more space in my stomach!

All in, this was a great experience for me and a great way to spend Halloween – amongst friends, happy children and wonderful food!

YS.

Yoga Therapy Introduction
6 Oct 2008

Can best be defined as a system of health care that treats human indispositions as naturally as possible, to alleviate pain and suffering through a set of exercises both physical and mental. Yoga therapy is also preventative in nature, while being curative in many instances, soothing in others and restorative in most. Rather than prescribe treatments, yoga therapy encourages awareness, through age-old techniques to know ourselves better.

From this awareness and knowledge comes the ability to more easily accept and adapt to change, resulting in enhanced wellbeing in body, mind, heart and spirit. Hence it is applicable to almost all chronic conditions.

Mind & Body Detox: Through Fasting and Yoga
20 - 21 September 2008

This workshop was successfully organized at Cocoon Yoga studios on 20th-21st September 2008, in collaboration with Yoga Leaf Bandung. The participants had a blast of a time! Read their testimonials below...

"The Mind and Body workshop was certainly very enlightening. It is amazing to discover one's capability whilst fasting. The knowledge gained was insightful especially that involving nutrition, the digestive process and how toxins are eliminated during fasting. A must try for All!!" - Fawzia (Housewife 51 years old)

"When I do Yoga, I feel a little bit active after, and its FUN! My favourites are the 'mantis', 'downward facing dog' and 'child position' :)" - Syed Imran Syed Nazri (Sekolah Sri Inai Kuala Lumpur, Standard 1, 7 years old)

“Personally, the whole two day experience was a totally different ball game for me. I consider myself to be a relatively active person..mostly in sports. Dudes, you thought going to the gym is tiring? As ‘anti-macho’ as it sounds and looks..Trust me..this yoga thing requires A LOT of stamina and upper + lower body strength! Honestly in the end I was quite satisfied with myself in terms of the things I've learned during the course. Never knew fasting has its healthy benefits.. Plus the meditation session at the end of each day of the course, really placed my life into perspective in looking at things in a more positive point of view. Looking forward to next year ;p Cheers~” - Faizal Ismail

“This is my first time attending a Yoga workshop at Cocoon Yoga. It was awesome! Through Fasting and Yoga, it helps me realize that I can still live without food. (Of course in the period of fasting hours only) What a good self-achievement! In this Workshop, I have had gained valuable experience such as digestion process, metabolism balance, balanced acids and alkali, systematic breath etc. Most importantly, it was increasing my focus and mental power as I’m practice Yoga through fasting. In addition, it has changed my perception that fasting is not only applicable for Muslims, it is also very relevant to those who are non-Muslim. This was not only spiritually beneficial to me but also mentally and physically through Yoga. Furthermore, it teaches me how to conserve energy during fasting. I feel very refreshed and energetic even though my whole body was aching :) Now I can say goodbye to my insomnia and tiredness. Thumbs up!" - YS

"Dear Cocoon Yoga / Yoga Leaf, the yoga workshop organised and conducted by both of your yoga centres on 20/21 Sep 08 has been my very first time. I actually carried out yoga and I am 47 years of age. It totally 'squashed' two myths of mine, mainly being my age, I could actually do pretty good postures and secondly, you can actually do 3 hours of strenuous and twisting yoga whilst you are fasting and still not feel tired (this was like my high school excuse for skipping gym classes)...well..sore and aching maybe. Overall a very good workshop. Congratulations!" - ZZ

The Kundalini Yoga Introduction Class
25 August 2008

"Kundalini comes from the Sanskrit root word of "kundal" which means "the lock of hair from the beloved." The uncoiling of this "hair," is the awakening of the Kundalini, the unlimited potential that already exists in every human being. Kundalini yoga is simple and uncomplicated. Yoga is the science of self and kundalini is the awakening of the self." [read more about Kundalini Yoga]

When we first attended the introduction class on 25th August 2008, we didn't know what to expect. There were about ten of us in the class, some with barely any yoga experience. The instructor, Fezia Tyebally, was not a conventional yoga instructor either. Kundalini, as it turned out, was an hour-long, massive stretching session. Although the movement appeared slow and easy, it was actually more physically exertive than it looked.

Fezia showed us many different postures and poses. Some were meant to straighten our spine, some to stretch our shoulder muscles, and some were meant to open up our chest so that we can breathe in deeper and fuller. Fezia also demonstrated that her body is so flexible that she could stretch out her legs lower her body downwards to touch the floor! All that stretching did our muscles a lot of good. Everyone was commenting on how much better they felt about their bad shoulder ache, tight hamstring muscles, tired spine, etc.

Iza Liyana, the owner of Cocoon Yoga, ended the introductory session with a round of specially prepared Yogi tea that made us all feel wam and fuzzy. The tea was based on a recipe of spices from Fezia; ginger root, cardomon pods, cinnamon and peppercorns. We were even given a little pack of it to bring home. Oh, and the dancing (yes, dancing!) definitely left a happy tune in our hearts that night.

Let's Play!
8 August 2008

"Come, Let's Play!" That seems to be the inviting call echoing through the beautiful studio on launch day. The launch date and time was auspiciously set to be 8.00am on 8 August 2008. That is 08:08:08 08/08/08, well-aligned with the auspicious number 8!

At 8am, the first batch of guests streamed through the main entrance of the studio, pleasantly greeted by a "Yoga Playground" wall mural done by a renowned mural artist. Colorful helium balloons shaped like flowers, pink throw cushions and a small reception table greet guests at the entrance lobby. We were handed brochures with information on the types of yoga classes available at Cocoon Yoga. Kids' yoga, prenatal yoga and yoga for working folks. The overall theme of pink and lavender floral prints, pretty butterflies and bright colors immediately set the playful tone.

This is a place to relax, to play and to have fun. As we oohed and aahed into the studio, we were further surprised by another wall mural of a peaceful tree, more balloons and two rooms partitioned by a sliding glass panel decorated by lovely floral prints. Small and large throw cushions were on the wood-paneled floor, allowing guests to sit and relax.

Further inside, the studio had a row of lockers, two changing rooms and even shower rooms. The area is brightly lit by the sunlight streaming through the windows. As we made our way to the main studio, we walked by a row of brightly colored pink, yellow and purple bean bags, meant for students while waiting for their classes. How thoughtful! :)

The main studio was well-lit and had one wall paneled with mirrors. There were lots of stuffed animals and a small trampoline in the room too. One little girl who came with her mother immediately took to the toys and happily jumped onto the trampoline for a bit of early morning exercise. A fantastic place for young kids, definitely!

Iza, the studio owner who conceptualized the notion of a Yoga Playground, came and ushered us towards refreshments that was prepared for the guests. Ah... Breakfast! She had thoughtfully catered finger sandwiches, puffs, tiny cakes and pies for the guests. Combined with coffee and tea, we had a good time catching up with friends over breakfast. Some of us sat on the bean bags, some with cushions on the floor, and then some had unique-looking cushioned seats that we later found out were special seats made for pregnant ladies. Iza has really put a lot of caring thought into ensuring the needs of all her students are taken care of!

The launch of Cocoon Yoga sent a happy message: This yoga studio is going to be different. It is going to infuse yoga with bright colors, embrace students with laughter and let everyone take home a little piece of Yoga Playground.

What else are you waiting for? Head over to the Cocoon Yoga studio and learn yoga in a refreshingly fun way! :)
